Spironolactone for women:The drug spironolactone is found suitable to treat acne especially in women if taken along with birth control pills. The drug has mild anti-androgenic properties as well as it acts as a diuretic also. Most of the women do not respond to the topical solutions especially during their adult years. Their acne flare up during their menstrual periods. They require a special treatment of medicines containing anti-androgen and get relieve with the use of spironolactone treatment. Women’s not responding with the antibiotic treatment is prescribed with the spironolactone. Treatment with spironolactone:Women in the age group of 20 to 30 may have irregular periods and often flare up of acne during premenstrual periods. Although the exact cause of increase of androgen is not known, however the ovaries may cause some abnormal hormone activity that acts as the trigger for this type of acne. The medicine is available in 50 mg to 200 mg and is not recommended for women having severe acne or severe cyst acne. This drug is also useful for androgenetic alopecia, hirsutism and supprativa. The medicine is used together with birth control pills and sometimes birth control pills are recommended for one week to one month prior to prescribing spironolactone. Once you notice regular periods, your acne will reduce. Your doctor will decide the dosage and the duration and it will depend on your acne condition. Precaution and side effects:If you are allergic to the medicine you should avoid taking spironolactone. The allergic symptoms include breathing problem, swelling in face and neck. The medicine should also not be taken if you are on ACE inhibitors. If you have a person history or family history of breast, ovarian or uterus cancer, you should inform your doctor before taking spironolactone. The medicine is also should not be taken if you are pregnant and have renal insufficiency or have abnormal menstrual bleeding. There are no serious side effects associated with the use of spironolactone , however menstrual irregularity has been reported by many users.If you notice any other side effects, you should consult to your doctor immediately. |
